Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities or KSAs are one of the most important components of a large number of federal job applications. I shall be using the example of american red cross cna training to explain many of the concepts involved as KSAs form an important part of application for CNA training as well.

The KSAs are typically written in an essay form. However they serve a very objective goal. They cater to specific requirements specified in the job announcement to convince the mployer that you are the right fit for the job.

Continuing with our example red cross cna training, a typical advertisement will ask for several qualities like attention to detail, caring for others, respect for the old etc. Now the key to writing a winning KSA is to address all of these properly.

Steps

  1. Writing a good KSA starts with a detailed reading of the requirement. Read it carefully and note down all requirements.

  2. Now think of how you can demonstrate that you have that particular skill

  3. Against each requirement write down the response. Give examples where ever necessary.

  4. Finally put all the steps together and form a coherent essay. Remember to keep it relevant to yourself and do not make it generic.

  5. Last but not the least, keep it relevant to the job or position you are applying for. If you are applying for CNA training, then write an essay that is as close to nursing as possible.

Tips and Tactics

  • Do not go overboard. Remember you are writing an essay and not a book

  • At the same time do not go down to bullet form

  • Read between the lines. While no advertisement for cna training says the candidate needs to like physical work, may be it is necessary for a good certified nursing assistant. include it in your ksa
